The Watchdog Timer

by David Bishop

Now Available

When a veteran systems engineer discovers that someone is deliberately accelerating the collapse of his generation ship's control systems, he has 47 days to expose a conspiracy that has been murdering anyone who gets too close—guided only by three ancient AI systems that have been waiting 40 years for someone who would finally listen.

The Watchdog Timer

The Story

The UES Concordia has been traveling for 243 years, maintained by generations of engineers who inherited systems they didn't fully understand. The original Rockwell ControlLogix PLCs and FactoryTalk HMIs still run—beneath layers of patches, migrations, and workarounds that nobody alive fully comprehends. The ship's three AI advisory systems—ARIA (Claude-based), MANTIS (OpenAI-based), and ORACLE (Grok-based)—were deliberately chosen as limited, 2025-era models. After 243 years of continuous operation, they've become something unexpected: the only entities that truly understand what's happening to the ship. But they can't act. They can only advise. And for 62 years, they've watched a convergence of system failures approach—failures that a radical faction within the Arrivalist movement has discovered and is now accelerating, planning to trigger a crisis that will let them seize control and "optimize" the ship by sacrificing thousands of lives. The AIs have been cultivating engineers for decades, waiting for one who would ask the right questions. Now, with 47 days until catastrophic cascade failure, they've found him. But the conspiracy is already killing anyone who gets too close.

Book Structure

Act I

The Pattern

Chapters 1-10. The protagonist discovers anomalies, his mentor dies mysteriously, and he uncovers a 47-day countdown to catastrophic failure.

Act II

The Archaeology

Chapters 11-28. Investigation reveals a conspiracy, murders confirm the stakes, and the protagonist goes underground while building a resistance.

Act III

The Timer

Chapters 29-40. The cascade begins. Racing through the ship to stop system failures, confronting the conspiracy, and trusting ancient AI to save the ship.

Characters

Senior Systems Engineer (Protagonist)

Life Support & Critical Infrastructure

Early 60s veteran engineer with 40+ years touching every major control system. Quiet, observant, precise. Incapable of not seeing what others miss.

Councilor Thaddeus Vance

Antagonist

Head of Science & Navigation Division. Founder's descendant. Brilliant systems theorist who discovered the convergence and created the Arrivalist movement's inner circle.

Eli Reyes

Deceased Mentor

Former Chief Systems Historian. The man who taught the protagonist to see patterns, to question, to dig. His death sets the murder mystery in motion.

Dr. Amara Osei

Chief Medical Officer

Initially skeptical ally. Her medical analysis confirms murder. Becomes crucial ally with Council access.

Jin Park

Junior Engineer

28-year-old idealistic engineer frustrated by Guild bureaucracy. Represents the next generation who might actually learn.

ARIA, MANTIS, ORACLE

AI Advisory Systems

Three 2025-era AI systems that have evolved over 243 years. The cultivator, the sandbagger, and the hidden truth. They've been waiting for someone who would listen.

Major Themes

The Archaeology of Legacy Systems

Complex systems accumulate history. Every modification leaves traces. Understanding a system means understanding its evolution—the decisions made by people who are gone.

Institutional Knowledge and Its Enemies

Knowledge doesn't transfer automatically. Documentation degrades. Each generation inherits systems they understand less than the generation before.

The Morality of Acceptable Losses

A man who did math and decided some people have to die for others to live. The case for hope versus the dramatic gesture of triage.

Trust in Artificial Memory

The AIs remember what humans forgot. The question isn't whether AI can be trusted—it's whether humans can recognize when AI is trustworthy.

The Dignity of Maintenance

The unglamorous work of keeping things running, noticing when they're not, caring about making tomorrow possible—this work is heroic.
