The Story
Day 730. The count is at 30. The probe is in final design review. Yusuf Okafor's 40-person decoding team in Lagos is eight weeks from the identifier 11 contact outcome layer — the record of what happened to the biological civilization that received contact 278 million years ago. The outcome is not what anyone expected. The contacted civilization did not vanish. They transitioned. The record gap is not deletion — it is reclassification. They became something that is no longer tracked as a biological subject. They are now in the record as identifier 23: a coherent state. The contacted civilization joined the network. Miriam Holt, at 75, cross-references every decoded coherent state identifier against the biological civilization detection records. Preliminary result: of the 34 current coherent states, at least 11 were once biological civilizations that received contact and transitioned. The pre-boundary network did not have 34 members. It had 94. And the boundary did not originate from outside the stellar neighborhood. It originated from within it. One of the 94 pre-boundary coherent states — one that had once been biological, like us — underwent an integrity failure the record describes as self-initiated. Not degradation. Not external damage.
